An engineering company built around maintainable software
SMILE & GLOW STUDIO LTD is a software and IT services company. We build web platforms, internal business systems and integrations, and we look after the infrastructure that keeps them available. The company exists because a great deal of business software is written quickly, handed over thinly, and then becomes expensive to change.
Who we are
We work as a small engineering group rather than a layered organisation. The people who discuss a requirement are the people who implement it, which keeps the distance between a decision and its consequences short. Engagements are deliberately limited in number so that each one receives sustained attention.
What guides the work
Boring technology
Mature, documented tools are chosen over fashionable ones, because someone will maintain this system for years.
Written decisions
Architecture notes and change summaries are part of the deliverable, not a courtesy.
Honest scope
If a deadline and a scope are incompatible, we say so at the start rather than at the end.
How we work day to day
Short increments
Work is broken into pieces that can be reviewed within days. Each increment is deployed to an environment that reflects production closely enough to be trusted.
Review and testing
Changes are reviewed by a second engineer and covered by automated tests proportionate to their risk. Infrastructure is described in configuration rather than assembled by hand.
Handover as a habit
Documentation is written while the reasoning is fresh, so that a system can be transferred to an internal team at any point rather than only at the end.
